“THE
COMPANION OF HONOUR I REGARDED,AS AN AWARD FROM THE COUNTRYFROM 50 YEARS OF
WORK- WHICH ITHOUGHT WAS OKAY” -HAROLD PINTER
He was
awarded the Shakespeare Prize (Hamburg), the European Prize for Literature
(Vienna), the Pirandello Prize (Palermo), the David Cohen British Literature
Prize, the Laurence Olivier Award, the Legion d’Honneur and the Moliere
D'Honneur for lifetime achievement. In 1999 he was made a Companion of
Literature by the Royal Society of Literature. He received honorary degrees
from eighteen universities.
The Birthday Party:
The Birthday Party, Pinter’s first
full-length play, opened in 1958 to terrible reviews at the Lyric Theatre,
Hammersmith. One performance reportedly played to exactly six people. Most
critics found the play confusing, obscure, and unconvincing. The general
theatergoing public, conditioned by the popular media, were equally dismissive,
and the play closed after only a week.
1)
The two sense of the lulu from the play is omitted in the film because
she is not protagonist in this play and lulu is a not major character
in the film when lulu was performing her character at the same time
other important situation were going on parallel.
2) Is movie
successful in giving us the effect of menace in the movie ,because while
reading the play felt that Stanley has a meritorious past which we are
not informed about. yes the movie using same techniques like: Ringing of
Ball knocking door , of newspaper and Stanley play the toy dam.
3) I
fell the lurking danger when the scene of two strangers come in meg
and Peters house . I have fett the effect of lucking daughter when
Goldberg is taking calmly with Stanley that since is dangerous because
it shows the hidden evil birthday party why and what will happen with
Stanley.
4) In film newspaper has symbol and any one has know about
them, if any person has to watch them. In starting film began one small
room one person Petey is reading ‘Newspaper’ may be he is educated,
intelligent, philosopher. He knew about what happened in the society.
5)
when camera positioned on head of McCain who playing blind man's buff
and when Stanley playing it .It also seems that McCann himself confuse
about what they are doing with Stanley. Camera covers so many things
like it convey the room is full of objects. When camera is over the
Stanley it indicates that he is bind up by such circumstances and if he
wants to escape then he can’t.
6) Yes it happens in the movie
that an enclosed space like a tiny kitchen and one room. We find so many
things that suggest that there is no space to breathe. And we find that
there are so many unpredictable dialogues from starting to the end of
the play. we can’t clearly say who is right or wrong ? because all the
character of the play do a right job if we look at from their
perspective
7). Pinter used same techniques in his play like Picturesque, lurking danger, pause, silence, menace etc.
8).
I agree with the second point " It's impossible to imagine a better
film of Pinter's play than this sensitive , disturbing version director
by William Fried kin.
9). If I was a director I would have made
same changes like : I would have change all characters, sound effect,
and focus on important dialogues.
10) If it depends on me to choose characters of the movie than I would like to give the characters to these actors:
Stanley Webber -Ranbeer Kapoor
Meg: Shree Devi
Petey –Mithun
Lulu - Dipika padukon
MacCan - Salmon khan
Goldberg - varun dhaval.
Thank You...
